Let’s be real—leadership is not for the weak. It’s like juggling flaming swords while riding a unicycle… on a tightrope… over a pit of hungry alligators. Okay, maybe not that extreme, but you get the point. Leadership comes with challenges, personal growth, and a whole lot of "Did I really just say that?" moments.
But don’t worry, I got you! If you’ve been following me on LinkedIn (which, if you haven’t, what are you even doing?), you know I’ve been dropping TJ Tips to help you navigate the world of leadership. So, here’s a recap of my top 5 leadership gems—because your team deserves a boss who knows how to lead, not just manage.
1. Approach Tough Conversations with Emotional Intelligence

Nobody wakes up excited to have that talk with an employee. You know the one—where you have to address performance issues, attendance problems, or (my personal favorite) why microwaving fish in the office is a crime against humanity especially if you work in an Aquarium.
But here’s the thing: Avoiding hard conversations doesn’t make problems disappear—it makes them fester. Approach discussions with empathy, facts, and a clear goal. Instead of saying, "You keep messing up," try, "Let’s talk about what support you need to improve in this area."
Pro TJ Tip: (Not posted on LinkedIn, so this is an exclusive TeaJ tip” Use the "SBI Model" (Situation, Behavior, Impact). Example: “Yesterday (situation), when you missed the deadline (behavior), it delayed the entire project (impact).” See? No drama, just facts.
2. Build Trust by Being Transparent

Leaders who hoard information like it’s a Black Friday doorbuster sale create confusion, frustration, and disengagement. Your team shouldn’t have to piece together what’s happening like it’s a season finale of Scandal (and I somehow remain Olivia Pope- The Fixer of my office while my fav show remains canceled).
Transparency builds trust. If you don’t have all the answers, say so. If changes are coming, communicate early.
When your team knows the “why” behind decisions, they’re more likely to buy in.
💡 Pro Tip: Instead of saying, “We’re making changes, that I can’t share yet,” try, “We’re working on some updates that will impact our team. I’ll share details as soon as I can.” Boom! Instant trust. Which feels so much better than the dangling carrot of info concept.
3. Focus on Solutions, Not Blame

We’ve all seen it—someone makes a mistake, and suddenly the meeting turns into an episode of CSI: Workplace Edition. While it’s easy to point fingers, great leaders focus on fixing the problem, not assigning blame.
Instead of saying, “Who messed this up?”, ask “What can we do to ensure this doesn’t happen again?” Encourage solution-based thinking and collaboration. Your team will feel empowered instead of terrified.
💡 Pro Tip: When things go wrong, take a deep breath and channel your inner Olivia Pope: "It’s handled.” That’s what I do.
4. Know When to Coach vs. When to Direct

Being a leader isn’t about barking orders like a bootcamp instructor. It’s about knowing when to guide and when to give clear instructions.
If someone is new or unfamiliar with a task → Be direct. Give clear steps.
If someone has potential but lacks confidence → Coach. Ask questions that help them think critically.
If someone keeps making the same mistake → Mentor. Identify gaps in understanding and fill them.
💡 Pro Tip: Think of leadership like parenting a toddler—some days you’re guiding, some days you’re saying, “Nope, don’t touch that!” I’m not saying their babies, I’m saying gauge what they need as you would a child you are nurturing.
5. Lead with Purpose (and a Little Humor- its good for the soul)

Nobody wants to work for a dry, robotic leader. People follow leaders who are authentic, passionate, and yes—sometimes even funny.
Injecting humor (where appropriate) makes you more relatable and helps ease tension. But leading with purpose? That’s what inspires loyalty. When your team sees that you’re committed to a bigger vision, they’ll be more motivated to give their best.
💡 Final Pro Tip: Don’t take yourself too seriously. You can drop gems of wisdom and still have fun doing it.
Final Thought: Your Leadership Legacy Starts Now
Being a leader isn’t about having a fancy title—it’s about how you show up every day. Do you inspire? Do you empower? Do you make people feel seen and valued?
If you got even one nugget of wisdom from this, then my job here is done (for now). But don’t worry, there’s more where this came from!
